About South Bank
South Bank is not a suburb in its own right — it is a 42-hectare cultural, social, educational and recreational precinct within the suburb of South Brisbane, administered by South Bank Corporation. South Brisbane sits 1.6 km south-west of the Brisbane CBD and had a population of 14,292 at the 2021 Census (ABS).
For transport, this is one of the best-served addresses in Brisbane: South Bank and South Brisbane railway stations (Beenleigh, Cleveland and Gold Coast lines), three South East Busway stations (Cultural Centre, South Bank and Mater Hill), and the South Bank CityCat and CityHopper terminal on the river. Six bridges connect the precinct to the CBD, including the pedestrian Goodwill and Kurilpa bridges.
The precinct itself contains South Bank Parklands — Streets Beach, the Wheel of Brisbane, the Nepalese Peace Pagoda and the Grand Arbour — alongside the Queensland Cultural Centre (QPAC, Queensland Museum, QAGOMA, State Library), the Brisbane Convention & Exhibition Centre, Griffith University South Bank and TAFE Queensland Brisbane.
Schools in the surrounding suburb of South Brisbane include Brisbane State High School (government secondary), Somerville House and St Laurence’s College. There is no government primary school in South Brisbane; the nearest are West End State School and Dutton Park State School.
